Wolf & Cub
Wolf & Cub hail from a very distant place - Adelaide, Australia to be precise. Yet word about their adrenalised take on darkly psychedelic, danceable noise spread far afield.
The band released their debut self-titled EP through the Melbourne label Dot Dash in late 2004. The band – a four piece whose line-up includes two drummers - quickly built up a dedicated live following, expanded by show-stealing performances at the Big Day Out festival. In 2005 they played with The Futureheads, and were handpicked by Josh Homme to tour with Queens Of The Stone Age.
Meanwhile, encouraged by the Rough Trade shops in London, a 7" featuring the track ‘Thousand Cuts’ made its way into the UK, picking up plays on the Zane Lowe and Steve Lamacq shows on BBC Radio. The track reached the ears of producer Paul Epworth (of Bloc Party and Futureheads fame); he took it into the studio and come out with the banging, electro-glam Phones Remix - this became a white label 12" and started to feature in discerning DJ returns.
4AD tied up negotiations with the band during the autumn, and Wolf & Cub's first full international release took place on in late 2005.
The single, a double A side, included a brand new recording – ‘Steal Their Gold’ – together with another Paul Epworth version of ‘Thousand Cuts’, this time much more faithful to the original. The CD version adds the semi-jammed ‘Intro’ that Wolf & Cub recorded for a Triple J radio session earlier in 2005 – its bass-heavy, polyrhythmic grooves offer a charged insight into the nature of the live experience.
